Modern Garage Door Update

Posted on November 4, 2019October 6, 2023

I got to thinking the other day about how we decorate our front porches to give friends and family a warm welcoming to our home. I realized that I don’t really go in and out of our front door. I’m in and out of the house but I am always using our garage door. I came up with the idea to give myself a warm welcoming anytime I come and go from the house. So I decided to take on a DIY Home Project to make a Modern Garage Door Update to my Home.

Here is the before of what I was looking at when I drove my car into the garage. NO BUENO!

How to Update your Door

This DIY project was easy and inexpensive. Here is what I did (check out the list of products I used at the end of this post so you can do your garage door too!).

It took me a few hours and makes a huge impact. The first thing I needed to do was clean the door with some really good cleaner. With it being the door in the garage it was covered with dirt and dust so using a strong cleaner is key to getting the door prepped before painting (don’t skip this step).

I then used a 220 grit sandpaper to lightly sand down the entire surface of the door. This will help the paint stick better to the door. Next I used painters tape to tape around the door and protect any of the areas I didn’t want to get paint on.

Then the magic started to happen! I taped a square on the door for some modern details and then went to town with my black paint. It took me 3 coats to get a really clean finish. The 3 coats go by really fast because the area I was working on was so small. I really love using a dense foam roller for projects like this to get a nice and smooth finish. After it dried I took stencil letters and a stencil brush and painted “Mi Casa Su Casa” on the door.

I hung a few details around the door to make it feel “Homey” and placed my pretty mat in front of the steps and Ta-Da. I WHIMED my garage and have a beautiful, modern door to welcome me home!

Now excuse me while I go paint all the doors in my house black. I’d love to know what you think about my quick garage refresh! Leave a comment below.

Here is a list of all the items that I used to created this Easy DIY Black Garage Door. Krud Kutter Cleaner | 220 Grit Sandpaper | Foam Paint Roller | Stencil Letters | Stencil Brush
