How to Make a Back-to-School Surprise

Posted on August 16, 2022October 6, 2023

I LOVE Back to School! I’ve always been someone who gets excited over new pens, notebooks, etc. When the Back-to-School Section at the stores start popping up, I love browsing the aisles and looking at all the cute school supplies. Every year I throw a little surprise for the kids for their first day of school. We’ve done full parties and fun breakfast boards. This year I wanted to surprise them with some of their new school supplies. Since we decided to Homeschool this year, I thought this would be a fun way to get them excited about our new adventure. How to set up a Back-to-School Surprise

Really this idea is super easy and can be used no matter what type of school you go to. Take some of their supplies and present them in a fun way!

First thing I did was enlist the help of my husband to make a bunch of paper airplanes. He folded the airplanes and then we attached them to string with a paper clip. I took the other end of string and tied them to our kitchen light fixture to make it look like they were flying in the air. It was totally magical!

I added the kids globe and some simple school themed decor that I’ve had over the years. Other ways to decorate could be using a jar full of apples, a large chalk board, maps, ABC chart, etc.

School Themed Gifts

As their “gift” I took supplies that we were needing for school and packaged them up cute. These jelly totes are so fun for any occasion. I filled them with writing notebooks, colorful pens, pencil sharpeners, watercolor set, student planner, tic tacs, and other fun items. You could add a cute t-shirt or new pair of school shoes for their first day too. I finished the basket with a nametag.

For Duncan, I took this adorable toddler backpack in the shape of a school bus and filled it with crayons, color books, connect the dot workbooks etc.

You could do this same idea with a fun new lunchbox instead of the jelly totes and backpack! These lunchbox and bento boxes are our favorite!

When the kids woke up in the morning and came down the stairs, their surprise awaited them on the kitchen table. We had a fun First Day of Homeschool Breakfast with French Toast and enjoyed our very first day of school at home.
