Whimsical Mushroom Sugar Cookies

Posted on November 20, 2023November 20, 2023

If you haven’t noticed, mushrooms are having a moment this holiday season. Everywhere I look I find mushroom holiday decor, ornaments and more. I love this trend. I’ve always thought mushrooms were whimsical and such a fun vibe. Maybe it’s because Alice in Wonderland was my favorite movie as a kid? Either way, I am here for the trend and decided to make some whimsical mushroom sugar cookies for the holidays.

This sugar cookie recipe is our family’s favorite. Rex says it’s the best cookie he has ever had. Have fun in the kitchen this season with the kids and make these easy mushroom sugar cookies together and hand out to neighbors.

Whimsical Mushroom Sugar Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp. almond extract
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp. corn starch
  • 1/2 tsp. salt

You will also need:

  • Extra sugar for rolling
  • Red jam (I highlt suggest Cherry)
  • Mini white chocolate chips
  • White Icing

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Start by creaming the butter and sugar together in a large bowl with a hand mixer. Add in vanilla and almond extract and egg yolks. Mix well. Add in the rest of your dry ingredients and mix together slowly. I like to use my hands to form dough into a ball. The mixture can be a little crumbly.

Form dough into small balls (about a tablespoon size). Roll the balls in sugar and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Using a clean glass, flatten your dough balls a little bit. Make a mushroom shape with your fingers on the top of the cookie. I like to use my thumb for the top and my index finger for the stem.

Chill in the freezer for about 30 mins. Once your cookies are chilled, place directly into your preheated oven and cook for about 12 minutes. When cookies edges are lightly golden brown, remove from the oven and let cool.

Fill the mushroom caps with jam and the stems with icing. Place 3-4 mini white chocolate chips on top of the jam.

EnjoY!

You can store these in an airtight container for a few days.

I will be bringing these adorable and whimsical mushroom sugar cookies to our Thanksgiving and also serving them at our holiday parties this year. These would be so fun to package up cute and bring to neighbors too!
