Easy Ways to Update a Builder Grade Powder Bathroom

Posted on August 3, 2020October 8, 2023

A Black and White, Desert Design

It’s so nice when a home project starts and finishes over a weekend, but not all projects are like that. This Powder Bathroom has been the slowest moving home project. With multiple stages, it has been months since we started this tiny little space. I am happy to report though, we are finally finished! Here is how we did a modern update on a builder grade powder bathroom.

It wouldn’t be a good before and after post if we didn’t take a proper look at the before…

There were a lot of things about this bathroom that needed to be changed. The first were the floors. A few months ago I shared our journey of ripping up our linoleum floors in this bathroom and the joining hallway. You can read my blog post on How to Tile Floors like a Pro for more details on how we did that ourselves.

How we Updated our Powder Bathroom

If you’ve been following around for a while, you know how much I love bold pattern, black and white floors. Remember when I stenciled the girl’s bathroom floors? Once the new floors were put down, that made a huge difference in this tiny bathroom, but more needed to be done. I told Rex to hold off on reinstalling the pedestal sink we had because I really wanted to upgrade that and the light fixture. To me those were easy fixes in instantly upgrading this bathroom. We save our money for a few months and tackled some other projects, like the DIY Board and Batten in the Hallway and the DIY Farmhouse Mud Room Wall.

I searched high and low for an affordable vanity for the powder bath. I wanted something with wood tones but more minimal and modern design. The new vanity we installed is amazing. The doors are great for holding extra toilet paper and soap for guests that visit the house. The minimal lines was exactly what I was looking for.

One of the biggest upgrades in the space that I wasn’t expecting was the new mirror we hung. I couldn’t believe what a difference the mirror made to our small powder bathroom. It was larger than what we originally had hanging and it makes the bathroom feel so much larger than before.

After changing out the sink and the mirror the light fixture was really sticking out like a sore thumb. The style of it and the silver finish just didn’t go with the new vibe in this bathroom. I found this really cute and inexpensive one that goes much better with the style of the room.

Finally it was time to update some of the décor on the walls. This is the best part of changing the feel of a room…the smaller details. If you haven’t noticed, there is a huge new terracotta color trend. With our recent trip to Utah it only felt right to bring some of that into the décor. It was the perfect way to bring in some color with all the black and white woven baskets. Images of succulents and prints from our Family Road Trip were added to the walls. Along with a pretty terracotta colored diffuser and soap bottles. These gorgeous hand towels were a perfect touch too.

I’m loving the vibe of this bathroom. I use to hate going in there, it felt so cold and plain and just BLAH. Now it’s cozy and modern and I’d be happy to spend as much time in there now that my husband usually does. haha
