The Cloffice | How to Turn a Linen Closet into a Small Office Nook

Posted on September 21, 2021October 8, 2023

This might just be my favorite home project so far. Over the years we have struggled with finding a place to work at home. Since our house doesn’t have an extra bedroom to turn into an office, we threw all our “work stuff” down into the basement. I really didn’t enjoy going down there, so I typically left my laptop upstairs to float around from room to room. When Rex would work from home he struggled to get stuff done. It was too loud, disorganized and cold down in the basement. And when bills and important documents were around they ended up on the kitchen counter where they would sit for a month before I stuffed them in a drawer to later be dealt with. When it came to our work, we weren’t very organized. We needed a designated work area desperately.

One morning I was laying in bed and looked over at the linen closet we had in our master bedroom. The closet had been a catch all for junk and was basically a dead space in the house. As I looked a little closer I realized that this space could be something pretty cool. Something functional. And something beautiful to look at.

Thus the idea of the Cloffice was born! Lets take a quick look at the BEFORE.

How to Make a Cloffice

The first step to this makeover was to remove all the baseboards and trim. Remove the door and then remove the shelves inside the small closet.

Next we mapped out how much of the wall we wanted to cut out. The sledge hammer became our best friend (although the mess was pretty insane). We decided to cut open the wall to make the space higher and went to the edge of the room to make it a little bit bigger.

After we had the space cleaned out we had an electrician come in and add a light at the top and an electrical outlet so we could charge our computer.

I then added shiplap to the back wall, painted and added the most BEAUTIFUL tile to the sides. The tile was something I saw months before and knew it HAD to go in my cloffice.

Once the tile was up we added two shelves and built the desk.

The cloffice was officially finished and then came the really fun part….the decorating. I grabbed a few prints for the shelves and the cutest pot for a fun plant. I took little jars and put office supplies in them and stacked them on top of eachother as a cute detail. A clock, a desk organizer and a new shelf on the nearby wall for all my essential oils and the space was finished.

I am so thrilled with how this space turned out. It’s beautiful and now is a functional use for this space in our Master Bedroom.
