Kids Haunted Playhouse | How to decorate for Halloween

Posted on October 8, 2021October 8, 2023

Over the Summer I spent an entire weekend upgrading the Kids Outdoor Play House into a Modern Farmhouse. It was a fun project that totally transformed their fun little house in the backyard. As we inch closer to Halloween, I really wanted to turn it into a Kids Haunted PlayHouse for them. Here is how I decorated it.

If you think this Haunted Playhouse is cute then you HAVE to check out my easy DIY Halloween Pennant Flags. They make perfect teacher gifts and the kids can do this craft all on their own!

How to Transform the Kids Playhouse

It didn’t take much to turn this cute little farmhouse into a spooky, haunted one. I made a pom pom garland in black, white and peach and strung it on the outside. I love how it adds just enough color to the front. After searching through my Halloween bins in the basement, I pulled out a giant fuzzy spider, a skeleton hand, and a huge black and white jack-o-lantern bucket. I attached the spider to the side of the house. It looks so cute climbing up the outside.

I stuck the skeleton hand in one of the flower boxes like it was coming out of the dirt. The girls really got a kick out of that. I even took pieces from a garland that looks like creepy, black vines and hung them over the edges of the rooftop and flower boxes.

For mini projects like this, I love to take advantage of our local Dollar Store. I snagged the cute sparkly bats, the mini “Boo” pick, and the fun plastic ghost sheets from there. In the window I hung the ghost sheets (don’t know what these things are called) so it would look like there were ghosts flying around inside. I attached the bats to the outside of the house so it looked like they were flying up to the moon and stuck the cute little “Boo” sign in the other flower box.

When the kids got home from school they were so surprised to see that a Witch put a spell on their tiny outdoor playhouse turning it into the cutest Haunted House in town. They love pretending to make spells and potions inside. It was fun and super easy to add a little Halloween WHIM to their outdoor play house.

Here are some items so you can put a spell on your kids play house too.

A great activity to do with the kids! I’m so happy to see you didn’t go all blood and gore—that drives us nuts. My wife and I hate seeing all the “evil” decorating that goes on around this time of year. We don’t know why it’s necessary to bring that level of evil into our world—there’s already enough of it here! Happy, fun decorating is the best IMO! 🙂
