How to update a kids playhouse.

Kids Playhouse Makeover

Posted on June 5, 2020October 8, 2023

My kids love their little outdoor playhouse. We’ve had it for 3 years now and the poor thing has been through a lot. I remember one night it was so windy that it actually tumbled across our backyard and lost the front door. The last 3 years it has been so loved by all my kids, even with its rough exterior. The wood was looking worn, the doorbell no longer rang, the front door was no where to be found. But even with those imperfections my kids still play “kitchen” or “restaurant” in it. So my mom and I, on a WHIM, decided to give this well loved kids playhouse a modern makeover.

Lets take a look at the BEFORE…

How we Fixed Up the Kids Playhouse

To me, this is the perfect project to let the kids get involved and help. My girls were all about getting in their playhouse and painting it. They got to work on the inside while my mom and I worked on the outside. Let me tell you, there were some pretty hilarious conversations happening and lots of giggles as they painted the inside walls of their playhouse. It was really fun to work on this project with them and I could tell they were really proud to be lending a helping hand.

I used the porch and patio paint I had left over from my Painted Linoleum Floor project and the Updated Patio Table I fixed up. We decided to paint the roof black and the walls of the playhouse white. I’m not going to sugarcoat it. This project was much more labor intensive then I thought it would be. I even joked on Instagram about how my Mom tried to kill me by taking on this project. It was a lot of awkward positions to get the inside painted and I definitely underestimated the square footage of their tiny playhouse. Definitely not one of my typical nap time DIY projects.

On the second day, I removed the windows and spray painted them black. I was originally going to spray paint the flower boxes black too, but I ran out of black spray paint. I rummaged through the garage to find another option and found a can of spray paint in this brown/gold color. It reminded me of the color of wood so I decided to go with it and I think it turned out really cute!

Adding Details to the Little Playhouse

Live Plants: After the paint dried I added succulents to the flowerboxes for a pop of green. The girls really got a kick out of having real flowers in them.

Solar Light: I also added an adorable solar light to the front of the house. The kids LOVE that it actually lights up when it gets dark outside.

House Number: I also added a house number. I chose the #3 for of course my 3 little munchkins.

Bell: The kids doorbell no longer was working so I added an adorable cast iron bell to the other side of the front door. The kids love ringing the bell. I’m sure the neighbors love it too. haha

Stenciled Floor: At the last minute I got the idea to stencil their little stepping stones inside the house. I used a floor stencil I had bought and never used. I laid it on the stone and used black spray paint to lightly spray the design on. Super easy and I love how it mimics our black and white stenciled floors in their bathroom. Such a fun detail that makes it look like they have real tile floors in their little house.

This is so darling! Our nextdoor neighbors had something like this growing up and I always wanted one! Your kiddos will remember this forever, especially since it was made with love! 🙂 Putting this on my DIY to-do list once we get a bigger yard!
