Hold Your Horses Cowgirl Birthday Party| Flying W Ranch

Posted on August 20, 2021October 13, 2021

Birthday parties for the kids are my favorite. I always let them decide every aspect of their Birthday. Do you want a theme? What colors do you want? How do you want your cake to look? What activities sound fun?

For Tessa’s 6th Birthday she requested a Cowgirl Party! She said she wanted ponies ( I will be forever ruined after Duncan’s Farm Birthday) and a real cowgirl hat and a vanilla/chocolate cake. I was really excited to throw this one together. There were some left over party supplies from Duncan’s ‘Til The Cows Come Home | Farm Themed Birthday that I could use. If you haven’t checked out that post, make sure you do! It was absolutely adorable!

Because her birthday is smack dab in the middle of Summer, it’s hard to get all her busy friends together. We opted to do a small family gathering at home for cake and present and then whisk her away to where real Cowboys and Cowgirls hang out. If you live in Colorado you HAVE to check out the Flying W Ranch, more info on that below.

First Things First….Here is how I decorated for Tessa’s “Hold Your Horses” Cowgirl Birthday Party

I started by making a balloon garland with cow print, red and white balloons. I stuck a giant horse balloon on one side and then draped a bandana garland throughout the balloon arch.

On the table I displayed a vase full of sunflowers and my trusty wooden crates. One of my must haves…our letter board said “Hold Your Horses. Tessa is 6” She wanted a giant number 6 balloon so I blew that up and set it on the table along with some cute cowboy boot plates and bandana napkins. Since it was a small gathering at the house and we would be eating dinner at the Ranch I displayed her gifts right on the table. A real cowboy hat and pink sparkly cowgirl boots.

For her birthday cake I did my tried and true Mom Hack! I bought a very simple cake from the grocery store. Had them write “Yeehaw” on the side and the slipped a small wooden cowboy boot right on top. Hooray, a cute, inexpensive Birthday Cake.

Wondering about her cake? Little brother accidently smashed it before we could sing happy birthday.

Flying W Ranch

After Tessa opened her presents and blew out her candles we drove to Colorado Springs to visit the Flying W Ranch.

Y’all this place is absolutely adorable and PERFECT for a good old fashioned chuckwagon experience for the family. It’s a family owned business that started in the 1950’s. 10 years ago it was completely destroyed by the Waldo Canyon Fire. They took the last 8 years rebuilding it from the ground up. The only thing that made it through the fire was a large wooden cross, that you will see still standing there today.

There is so much to do and see at the Flying W Ranch. It’s situated in the gorgeous Garden of The Gods area of Colorado Springs. The views alone are worth going for.

When you first arrive you get to road the grounds. They have livestock like chickens, horses, bulls, and sheep. You can take carriage rides, try homemade skillet biscuits, take a train ride and check out a real Indian teepee.

When the dinner bell rings everyone joins under a beautiful log pavilion. You grab a metal dinner tray and they serve up a delicious Cowboy dinner. Brisket, sausage, biscuits, baked potatoes, beans and more. The kids got such a kick out of this. You sit and eat at long family style tables so you get to make a lot of new friends.

After dinner a western band puts on a FANTASTIC show. I’m telling you, these guys are so talented. It was fun, entertaining and the music was so good. We all had the biggest smiles on our faces. It was perfection.

If you are near Colorado Springs I highly recommend the Flying W Ranch for a unique experience the whole family with enjoy.
